About the Course

Health Promotion is anew profession in the health sector that deals with prevention of diseases and improving health lifestyle so that people can live longer and maintain healthier lives.

Duties of a Health Promotion Officer :

  • Provide basic nursing care
  • Provide HIV and AIDS testing and counselling
  • Provide First Aid
  • Take temperature, BP, Pulse and respiration
  • Identify and assess outbreak of transmitted diseases, teach and refer for treatment
  • Identify Sexual Transmitted Infections, teach and refer for treatment
  • Identify children who are not immunized and refer for immunization
  • Assess pregnant mothers and refer for treatment
  • Identify drug and substance abusers and refer them to rehabilitation centres
  • Teach about dangers of drug abuse
  • Teach about women and men's health
  • Teach about children's health
  • Teach about healthy lifestyles

How do Health Promotion Officers fit in the health sector?

Health Promotion Officer is a profession that bridges the gap between communities and health institutions such as Clinics, Rehab Centres, Testing and counselling centres, etc, as they form a greater part of primary health care re-engineering teams which is currently being rolled out by Department of Health throughout South Africa.
